The Japanese Instrument “Taiko”

  1. Today, I want to introduce the “Taiko” (Japanese traditional drum). This is one of popular instruments in Japan. This is an important traditional instrument.
  2. Why do I choice this topic about Japanese traditional instruments? Because as you know that some Arabic classmates introduced their own traditional instruments in Ruelaine’s class.
  3. I didn’t know these Arabic instruments at all. I feel these sounds so strange and fun.
  4. So, I want to introduce my country traditional instruments and hope to fun for foreigner classmates, too.
  5. Off cause, there are a lot of other traditional instruments in Japan. There are such as some-stringed musical instrument, other drums and kind of flutes.
  6. But most activity and popularly traditional instruments is “Taiko”. And usually this instrument is necessary for general Japanese festival.
  7. This has heads on both sides of the drum body, and a sealed resonating cavity. And this is also characterized by a high amount of tension on the drums heads.
  8. And player is using wood stuck “Bachi”. The player strikes “Taiko” by this wood stick “Bachi”.
  9. There are how many different size of “Taiko”. So, player striking this instrument is dynamic and fun.
  10. Anyway, if you have enough time and interested in this instrument, I recommend listening this instrument sound.

    Hello Takeshi.
    It's interesting. All of the instrument have a unique sound. When I listen the Taico, I can feel Japanese culture image. Arabic instuments also was interesting. That sounds seem like country image.

    This is similar to the instruments which people showed int the 2009 Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony.

    It's very interesting topic. Whenever I hear about other countries' culture, I am very interested in. My country also has traditional instrument, such as Kayakem, Kemoongo and Ajang, etc. Nowadays traditional instrument is getting forgetable to people. This point make me disappointed.

    6. But THE most ACTIVE and POPULAR traditional INSTRUMENT is “Taiko”. And usually this instrument is necessary for general Japanese festivalS.

    10. Anyway, if you have enough time and ARE interested in this instrument, I recommend listening TO THE sound OF THIS INSTRUMENT.

    PERSONALLY, I HAVE NEVER PLAYED THE TAIKO. IN NYC, THERE WERE SOME TAIKI TEAMS, AND MANY OF THEM WERE AMERICANS. HAVE YOU PLAYED THE TAIKO? OR DO YOU PLAY NOW? I WAS REALLY MOVED BY THE FILM. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE JAPANESE MUST NOT LOSE.
